Suzhou Laboratory Publishes Review Paper on 2D Materials for Future Information Technology

Professor Wang Xinran, Director of the Frontier Materials Research Department at Suzhou Laboratory, led a collaborative effort involving over 100 experts from 44 Chinese universities, research institutes, and industrial entities to co-author the review paper "Two-dimensional materials for future information technology: status and prospects". Published in SCIENCE CHINA Information Sciences, the paper comprehensively summarizes key advancements across the entire R&D chain—from material preparation, characterization, and metrology to microelectronic/optoelectronic device development and heterogeneous integration with silicon technologies. It further outlines strategic roadmaps and critical challenges for transitioning 2D materials from fundamental research to industrial applications.

The review emphasizes the urgent need to develop specialized technologies and tools tailored for 2D materials to meet industry standards compatible with silicon-based integrated circuits. It highlights the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in accelerating material growth, characterization, device fabrication, and circuit design. To address current limitations in silicon-based technologies, the authors advocate for intensified academia-industry collaboration to propose targeted solutions. Such efforts aim to advance the heterogeneous integration of 2D materials with silicon platforms over the next decade, fostering sustainable development of China’s integrated circuit industry in the post-Moore era.
